• OUR MISSION

    The Third Millennium Foundation (3MF)

The Third Millennium Foundation (3MF) is an environmental organization founded in 1987 by David McTaggart, the iconic former Chairman of Greenpeace International, and it became the base for his work after his retirement from Greenpeace in 1991. Over the years, 3MF has been involved in a variety of initiatives, including anti-whaling campaigns, the Environmental Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty, supporting the victims of the Chernobyl disaster, and promoting organic farming in olive cultivation in Italy.

In honor of David's legacy, a dedicated team of people who worked closely with him before his death continues his work under the 3MF banner. Our current focus is on facilitating the generational shift in environmental campaigning and fostering the much-needed intergenerational dialogue between the pioneers of early environmental activism and the new wave of activists. Based in David's hometown of Paciano, Italy, we aim to assist this exchange and collectively create a new, shared vision for the future of environmental advocacy.

    OUR FOUNDER

    David Fraser McTaggart

    (June 24 1932 - March 23 2001)

David McTaggart was a Canadian activist and one of the key figures in the history of Greenpeace. He played a pivotal role in transforming Greenpeace from a fractioned grassroot collective into the highly organized, internationally recognized organisation it is today.

It all began in the early 1970s when McTaggart and a group of friends famously sailed his sailboat, the Vega, to the Muroroa Atoll to protest French atmospheric nuclear tests in the South Pacific. For two years, they sailed into the restricted zone around the Atoll, defying France’s unilateral declaration of the area as off-limits. On his second voyage, McTaggart and his crew were attacked by French commandos who stormed the boat, leaving him badly beaten and taking the group into custody. McTaggart sued the French government, and, in 1974, he secured a historic victory. That same year, France announced the end of its atmospheric nuclear testing program—a milestone moment for environmental activism.
